Christmas Season, Capitalism and Advocacy for a Mass Media Advent!

Even if I chose to tune out all the Christmas music, all the knick knacks at Stop and Shop, blow up Santas and moving plastic reindeer with red plastic noses that blink to the rhythm of your favorite ipod tune, I have to set foot in a store sometime — and it’s only days now until the Christmas season begins.

And then what I can’t figure out is why we would sing all the songs, buy all the presents, eat all the cookies, for two full months, if not longer, and then quit on the evening of the 25th of December! The whole point of the holiday is that it was an extended celebration. So we mess up the preparation, and then we don’t celebrate like we could or should!

Here’s what I suggest to the mass media. Let’s re-instate Advent! We can make cheesified versions of all the Advent songs to put on the mall loudspeakers, and we can WAIT for once!

But isn’t that just the way things are. Why do so many divorces happen? Maybe people have forgotten the reasons to wait (at least a week, people!) and rushed into situations they didn’t see. People celebrate Christmas before it comes, and then when it does come, we already called ‘wolf’ and we’re bored with it! We got what we came for — stuff! Now let’s think about the next big party…

Here’s to fall, and the smell of fallen leaves, rotting after the first frost. The magic of waking up and looking outside in the middle of the night, and realize that the whole world is glowing, from the first frost, or the first snow! Enjoy it — and give the media my message:)
