I always end up representing something else. I’m not quite sure what it is that I represent, except that it is hard for me to cope with the concept of destruction. I am a hopeful person, or a pessimist in denial:) I tend to argue that things will change, and that there is hope… My big issue is humanity, and I always talk about wars, and poverty…
I guess what we both forget, around the dinner table at Christmas, is that we are all on the same side, and I think this world is in the same situation. The conservative, Christian Right in Germany is pro-environment. Why do we stick to our destructiveness in this country?
Back to the point of this post:) — Ms. Lyman wrote a comment on my post about the beautiful Gates in New York City last spring (click here for post), because she wrote an article for the Sierra Club magazine in 1996 using the same title!
Her article, 12 Gates to the City, talks about humanity and green, cities and nature. 12 ways to build healthy and strong urban areas! Ways for people who live in the city to connect to something that they are missing. And at the same time, to connect to the environment in new ways, preferring sustainable activity to buy-discard-and-buy-again culture…
Can we re-create our lives so we don’t live each day to discard it? Can we walk down the street and engage with people again, in a way that could support all of us in an active and healthy community?
Check out this article on the sierraclub.org website. And purchase Ms. Lyman’s books!
