The Cuckoo and American Roots Music

Posted on Thursday 26 January 2006

The Cuckoo may be the oldest song in human history. The earliest written vernacular songs, as well as early Tibetan writings, talk about the Cuckoo. The British celebrate the Cuckoo’s call each year as the harbinger of spring, and fertility.

The story of the song the Cuckoo takes us across the ocean, into the backwoods, into both black and white culture, and emerges, dripping wet, on the shores of the 21st century.

Doc Watson, Clarence Ashley, Jean Ritchie, Deana Carter, and more…

This is just part of the story of the beloved song, The Cuckoo!
